Case Study of Atopic Dermatitis

A patient of 40 years consulted us for her skin allergies. She told us she had dermatitis from last 10 years and now her skin appears black in color. She has severe itching, once she started scratching, her skin became more itchy and she scratched till it bleeds. Her bleeding spots caused pain and burning over affected area. She even cannot cover that area because any fabric sticks to bleeding spots. She told us it all started after she used some cosmetics that wasn’t suited her, initially it appeared as a scales and small spot over skin but with time it rushes to itching and extreme discomfort. She was embarrassed and tried to avoid social meet ups due to itching, it seems too awkward to indulge in itching publicly.

Her complaints aggravated with change of weather, after changing clothes, exposure to sunlight and itching after bitter, sour food. Her skin allergies started after her pregnancy, even her new born had slight eczema on legs. Her menses were regular with normal discharge and remains for 4 days. None of her family member had any of skin allergies but she remarked it as an result of stress and anxiety after child birth. Her postpartum was extremely depressed and she was gloomy and got no support from her husband and family during tough times.

She applied sunscreens with suggestion of her skin specialist to protect her skin from sun but it resulted into sun burn and turned it into black discoloration.

We took her case history, including her pregnancy, family history and menses. Medicines were prescribed in order to prevent any initial flare up and aggravations. Advised her to discontinue any product that wasn’t made for her skin or not suitable. Ask her to remain hydrated, drink more water in order to reduce dryness. Her skin started to heal up after 3 months and skin was completely healed within 5 months.
